The Desktop Configuration Guide says to use *either* USBMOUSE or HID, but not both. I'd guess HID is often enabled and if people don't disable it, they'll have problems. I've went round and round with this, trying different modules, trying things compiled directly in (as suggested by the USB Mouse and Keyboard HOWTO), and so on.
