Gentoo is the first distro where I've had to even think about it. :-)
You don't need both installed. If you want to use Gnome apps under KDE you just need the appropriate Gnome *libraries* installed, and portage will take care of these. For example try: `emerge -pv gnomeicu` - I would have thought that would do it.
Look out for Gnomish USE flags: `grep ^g /usr/portage/profiles/use.desc`
