Yeah, you definitely need some tuning.  With my lowly Maxtor 30G disk I get

/dev/hdb:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   652 MB in  2.00 seconds = 325.40 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  122 MB in  3.04 seconds =  40.11 MB/sec
