i'm not sure if this is relevant (this isn't a 'world'), but i get:

  root: purslow> emerge -p qt

  These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

  Calculating dependencies ...done!
  [blocks B     ] <kde-base/kdelibs-3.1.4 (from pkg x11-libs/qt-3.2.2)
  [ebuild     U ] x11-libs/qt-3.2.2 [3.1.2-r4] 

  root: purslow> emerge -p kdelibs

  These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

  Calculating dependencies ...done!
  [ebuild  N    ] kde-base/kde-env-3-r2  
  [ebuild     U ] kde-base/arts-1.1.4 [1.1.3] 
  [ebuild     U ] kde-base/kdelibs-3.1.4 [3.1.3-r1] 

this is  qt-3.2.2 , not  qt-3.2.2-r1  (as CB wrote).
