I have been using linux for about five years, mainly RedHat and Mandrake. I successfully installed Gentoo and have a semi-working system. It has brought home to me how much I have been protected from by Mandrakes Installation managers. I have been trying to configure cups to use my Canon S400SP. I have got all the relevant modules compiled and running - parport - parport_pc - lp I have started the cupsd server, but my printer is not listed in the http://localhost/631 configuration interface. In fact very few printers are listed here. No canon printers are listed at all. It should also be noted that when I try to test the printer by sending text to the printer as follows cat test.txt > /dev/lp0 I remains silent and nothing is printed. Can anyone give me any clue as to what I have or have not done. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks in Advance
