Ok, I cd'd to /usr/lib and ran: 
bash-2.05b# ln -s libssl.so.0.9.7 libssl.so.0.9.6
bash-2.05b# ln -s libcrypto.so.0.9.7 libcrypto.so.0.9.6

Then I ran: 
bash-2.05b# revdep-rebuild

Now no error messages when I run etc-update.
