I'm running nvidia/linux2.6/kde and have found no problems at all. The nvidia-kernel ebuild includes at least some patches from www.demion.de simply to get it to work with the 2.6 kernel. As for sluggishness, I ran nptl for a short time and noticed no difference with nvidia. In fact, I noticed no real difference with nptl.
