experiment with grub on the command line, maybe from a boot disc;
your setup is probably
setup (sd0)
root (sd0,4)
and in grub.conf something like
title Gentoo-vmlinuz-2.6.0-test9-mm2
root (sd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.0-test9-mm2 ro root=/dev/sda5 hdd=ide-scsi
hdg=noprobe
or
title Gentoo-vmlinuz-2.6.0-test9-mm2
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.0-test9-mm2 ro root=/dev/sda5
do you see a mixture of hd - sd ?
did you try the livecd 2.6 Nov 5 ?
