I have two AMD 2200+ systems with 512MB or RAM.

I run the Linux command line [EMAIL PROTECTED] client on both.

Both systems used to be Red Hat Linux 9.
Both system used to process work units in about 3:30 minutes.

Then...I wiped Red hat on one of them....and installed Gentoo 1.4 from
stage 3....with AMD optimisations.

I also installed/compiled Xfree and KDE and a couple of other things -
but not much.

Now...the Red hat 9 system still does 6-7 WUs / day.

But the Gentoo system only does 3.

The CPU times used is still 3:30.....but each WU takes twice as long.

When I ran TOP, I found a root session was running nano - at 50% CPU -
continuously. This session would have survived at least 3 reboots.

This system is behind my firewall and I have no reason to think it has
been hacked.....and why would nano be using 50% of the CPU anyway?
