I don't know what the GNOME2 date/time issue is, but you can adjust the
time from the command line using a command like:
date 111720102003.29
where the number is of the form
MMDDhhmm[[CC]YY][.ss]
(M = month, D = day, h = hour, m = minute, s = second, C = century,
Y = year)
man date for details. Note that this command must be run as root.
