I don't have a HP Printer. To get my Canon printer working., I had to emerge gimp-print then download the recommended ppd file for my printer and follow the directions at http://www.linuxprinting.org to set it up. You'll find the ppd for your printer here http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-DeskJet_420C and the setup instructions here http://www.linuxprinting.org/cups-doc.html
