Sounds like that buggy IDE driver. I had the same problem. What I did
was use gentoo-test-sources, which is based on Linux 2.4.22, and has
updated IDE drivers. However, that led to a chain of other fixes and
updates to get everything else working again. But now that system (a
laptop) works fine.
