Try this: re-check that option to automatically save sessions. Close all
your apps. Log out, log back in. rinse. repeat. Now, go back and
un-check that option again. Hopefully it will "stick".

Your XF86Config file should have a input section for your keyboard, with
entries like this:
Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
Option "XkbModel" "microsoft"
Option "XkbLayout" "us"
# you might need a different layout.
Mainly, the model should be "microsoft".
When that is done, the "Windows" key becomes <mod4> (or "Super"), and
the menu key is "Menu". I redefine all my window manager shortcuts with
those keys.
