Have you used ufed to change the USE-flags recently? I noticed that all my USE-Flags that were in make.conf and make.defaults were deleted after I used ufed, i.e. they were deleted from make.conf. All negative USE-flags like "-gnome" were left intact. The result is that a USE-flag is set in one place. On the other hand if make.defaults would change after, say, an emerge sync, the USE-flags settings would change also. I don't know if that behaviour of ufed is intended, but I find it actually pretty annoying, because I have to check my settings after every update. BTW, I believe it was ufed that changed my USE= line, but I could be wrong, of course. Can somebody confirm this? > Is this a sign of a badly composed package? Looks like it. > I wish I had a backup of my make.conf...... That's a very good idea. I always have at least one copy of make.conf, never had problems with system settings. Hope that helps.
