Yes, Gentoo portage makes it great! I installed xine on a Caldera RPM system several years ago and what a fight to find all the files I needed. With Gentoo I just did an emerge xine-gui, started xine and I can play a dvd - "Wing Commander" was the test! You have to love Gentoo!
