I just completed a similar installation using theese floppies:

http://home.tiscalinet.ch/bgiannone/rescue/

After some problems with toms root/Boot not having support for
networkcards or not booting properly (same with slack)  on that laptop. 

Overall i liked their "feel" , YMMV


after that, just the alt-install guide should be enough.
