I use an internal Lucent modem. It took some work to get it going, but it works well.
The driver
documentation says "will not work with Conexant, etc." but recommends:

Also try http://www.linmodem.org. You need to get a driver installed and working
before you can
think about "which tty". If a driver is available, it should create the tty for you.
