Hello Users,
I have been happily using gentoo from a stage1 install for some time.
Happily, that is, until I upgraded my system and started another stage1
install about 24 hours ago.
This time I can't get past portage update following emerge sync because
ncurses-5.3-r2 fails with 'error: C++ processor "lib/cpp" fails sanity check
and terminates with Function econf, line 324, Exitcode1, econf failed.
I have checked the lists and bug reports and it seems the problem is that
C++ is not installed in the gcc install and this fails ncurses. There is a
'catch 22' because gcc can't be updated or emerged without ncurses
(USE="-ncurses" has no effect on the dependancy issue). If I ignore the
failed ncurses, accept that portage is not updated and proceed to emerge
system that process fails when slang is installed with inumerable 'host not
found' and similar responses.
I tried downloading and installing the full gcc but haven't been able to
make ncurses see that in preference to the version in sys-devel.
I am astonished and frustrated that the install can be so convoluted and
effectively impossible in my case. Can anyone please help me back into
gentoo? I do want to do a stage1 install to optimize the benefits of my new
system. Thanks.
Dennis
