if you actually use logrotate (this depends on your logger and config.
in Gentoo you have to manually install logrotate to make it work) it
will be defined in logrotate's config file for how long to keep logs.

its the "rotate" statement in /etc/logrotate.conf

For sysklogd, I don't know how many are the default, I think 10?  
Metalog I have no clue about.
