Did you install Alasa? Check out the Gentoo docs on
setting up sound.

Hi all,
I've just installed gentoo 1.4 for the first time, so
I'm not
very familiar with the system yet, and obviously I've
still got
a few problems. Let's begin with the sound, when I run
sound-using
applications (as root), I get error messages of the
'/dev/sound/dsp
not found' variety. When I check, indeed there's no
/dev/sound/dsp,
but there is a /dev/sound/dspW. I suppose that's the
device I need
to use instead, so I made a symbolic link /dev/sound/dsp
to it, but
to no avail. IIRC in my previous linux install (debian
woody) the
sound device was /dev/dsp, and I got that one working
fine (after
fixing some permission problems). Any ideas what causes
these problems?
