The slowest hard drives, with the worst settings, under the worst circumstances, will still beat 230KB/s by an order of magnitude. And good hard drives will beat it by two orders of magnitude.
How about the switch as the weak link? Have you tried a crossover cable
to directly connect two of the boxes?
