To be able to search the most current tree of portage-packages with esearch you'll have to update the "database" that esearch uses. This is done by running'eupdatedb'. Else the database will represent the portage-tree as it was the latest time you ran eupdatedb. The reason esearch is so much faster than 'emerge -s' is that it creates a database to search from...
