If you'd like a nice, full-featured gtk+ app, give media-sound/grip a shot. Grip 3.1.3 in ~arch is gtk+2 if that's your thing. Also media-sound/sound- juicer is a nice, simple gnome2 app for CD ripping.
Grip is very nice indeed.
I use to install bladeenc to create mp3's as ogg xmms didn't apply the EQ for oggs when I used it last time, about a year ago.
I don't specifically blame xmms for not doing so, it may be a feature bug related to some sound driver plugin or whatever.
I don't use linux for a desktop right now, but I will as soon as my time allows an install.
