Ok, based on what I found from the link to /bin/domainname, if you use /etc/nisdomainname instead of /etc/dnsdomainname the (none) goes away and the name shows up correctly if you have just the machine name in /etc/hostname and the domain name in /etc/nisdomainname. In my case, it shows up as machinename.domainname.
