This is how it is mentioned in the docs, but I had the same problem as the
original poster and it only got away when I renmaed grub.conf to menu.lst.
Actually I linked it to grub.conf but then I had a menu.

The only thing not working are the colors.

I had
 color yellow/blue white/blue 
in my configuration. The colors were right, but the selcted entry wasn't
inverted so ther was no bar which looked quite ugly and was confusing.
Then I read that the second parameter is optional and if not present it will
invert the first two colors.
With the above colors I would have expected to have a yellow bar with a blue
background. Instead I got blue text with a blinking brown bar.

Then I added blue/white as the second argument and now I have a balck and
white screen but with properly inverted color for the selected entry. It seems
the color doesn't really work.
