Well, much more information is needed to solve the problem. Such as:
How did you compile and install the kernel?
What are the exact error messages in XFree86.log?
What is the output of lsmod?
What is happens if you run "insmod </path/to/nvidia.o"?
Have you successfully ran a previous 2.5/6 kernel?
