To start with I'm not a data base, web or anything administrator, I am a tech. I tried to use eestock as an inventory program (postgres_php_apache) but couldn't get it to do a thing. Phppgadmin had no problems in working with eestock database which leads me to believe that the culprit is eestock. I've wasted enough time trying to get it to work. I've noticed quite a few inventory oferrings using mysql and will give one of them a shot if I can only get mysql to the first base.

I've emerged mysql and ran the ebuild /blahblahblah.ebuild config and have issued /etc/init.d/mysql start [that went ok]
then: /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h crash password somepassword
root # /usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h crash password somepassword <enter>
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'crash' failed
error: 'Lost connection to MySQL server during query'
what am I doing wrong? anyone?
