yes, I run a firewall (gshield) but just to be sure I shut it down to test. And yes it is right that I get internet access using a non-proxied connection as root. I use squid on my personal laptop, so I am the one who configured it - I use it mainly to filter ads. I don't like those flickering spots when browsing ;-) Could you ping the hosts in my resolv.conf?
