Check your XF86Config files on both machines. I see a roughly 
25% drop in frame rate if I use 24 bit color over 16 bit. Are you 
quoting frame rates at the default window size or at full screen? I 
am seeing >6000 F/sec at the default window size and 320 F/sec full 
screen. I'm running at 1600x1200 and 16 bit color. I'm using an 
Nvidia GeForce4 video card. Your card should be fairly close in frame 
rate depending on your chipset.
