I have had Gentoo on my laptop for almost a year now, and have been
using the pentium4 flags. I have not had any problems relating to the
use of those flags.

gcc -v reports...
gcc version 3.3.2 20031022 (Gentoo Linux 3.3.2-r3, propolice)
