One thing refugees from other linux distros often forget to do when rolling their own kernels is to mount /boot (Gentoo's /boot is not mounted by default). If that didn't apply to you I'm sorry for mentioning it. I can assure you that "usual" kernel building _does_ work - I never use genkernel - I want to be in control. Perhaps you could do a `make mrproper and try again?
