hmmmm ... which mount devfs command ? In which script ?
AFAIK kernel is mounting /dev itself (if devfs support is compilled in).
I do not have any line for devfs in /etc/fstab also ...
if u have one, comment it out !

The mount devfs command is in /sbin/rc. I tried taking it out and the system will boot after that, but devfs is not mounted. I too thought the kernel would mount devfs on /dev automatically, but it appears not. I tried the devfs line in fstab yesterday... didn't work so I took it out.

It seems u run some extra (broken) devfs mount command, which replaces functional one... run "mount | grep devfs" and check it !

Not following you here... are you thinking that "mount | grep devfs" would show two devfs entries? When I log into the maintenance console (after the aborted boot) and check mount, the only things that show up are /root and /proc. However, the file .devfsd does exist in /dev and there is a devfs entry in /proc/filesystems. This is how the devfs docs
(http://www.atnf.csiro.au/people/rgooch/linux/docs/devfs.html#what-is-it)
say to tell if devfs is compiled in the kernel and mounting... unfortunately, they don't say anything about devfs mounting but coming up empty!.

It seems like I was able to cat devfs somewhere, but maybe not... in any case, it still needs to do some translating from the default /dev hierarchy into the devfs format. And that it certainly not working for me. Argh... it's so frustrating.

Didn't follow you here. Thanks for your help so far... any other ideas?
