[gentoo-user] emerge -u world gives nothing

I type emerge -u world and it says that I am up to date, yet there are 
numerous packages for which I do `emerge -p -u <package_name>` and it 
lists a newer version than what I have installed.

I'm guessing that my world favourites file is corrupt or missing.  Is 
there any way of regenerating that file based on the packages I 
currently have installed?
