Hi all,

I've been attempting a stage 2 Gentoo installation with genkernel, following
the instructions in
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook.xml?part=1, using a knoppix
boot disk.

The installation seemed to go fine, but when I tried to boot gentoo, the
boot sequence errored with the message "Unable to open console".

On rebooting my knoppix rescue disk, I noticed the gentoo /dev directory is
empty, which apparently can cause the "unable to open console" error.

I'm hoping this is a known problem and someone can suggest a simple fix. If
not, I'll scrap the installation and start again.

Well, /dev should be empty if you are not in your Gentoo installation. This directory is populated by devfsd while your system is running. What kernel did you use?
