Are you using NPTL (Native Posix Thread Library)? For what I do know, there was a known bug in this context triggered by Samba, which caused smbmounts to freeze quite frequently.

Interesting question... How would I know?  Cann't find it in the kernel
configs, or by searching with emerge.

setting the env variable LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 disables NTPL, so you could set that and then run smbfs, if that is indeed the problem.
