Doing a grep of /usr/portage (as of Wed, 14 Jan 2004 04:51:02 +0000) and
studying it a little shows that no package depends on x11-libs/xft, that the
only package that directly supports it is x11-libs/fltk/fltk-1.1.2-r2 and the
only package to block it is x11-base/xfree-*.

I guess you haven't updated in a long time (which is okay) or you would have
came across this much sooner. Unmerging x11-libs/xft should cause no problems
but, if it does, just re-emerge any package that breaks.
