You need to set up PORTDIR_OVERLAY in your /etc/make.conf to point to your
local portage tree (mine is set up to /usr/local/portage). This one does not
get overwritten with `emerge sync`.

Insude that dir, it is advised to create directory structure similar to main
portage (net-mail, net-mail/application, etc.).
