I too have run across this exact problem. But recompile gcc? That seems a bit extreme, particularly since I already had the USE flags for kde and qt set when I compiled gcc the first time! (I skipped this step, and am now installing gnome. When I'm done, I'll go back to kde. I do want both on my system, but don't see either as a necesity as long as one is available...)
