You might want to check out <http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=67849&highlight=portage+utilities>. These are all user written utilities to aid in the administration of your shiny new Gentoo system. There are a few for cleaning out tarballs from /usr/portage/distfiles. It doesn't hurt to delete the files. It can just be painful if you don't have a high-speed internet connection ;)
Also, lets say that i installed mplayer manually (eg. ./configure make make install). Is there some way to tell portage (emerge) that mplayer is installed? (i did the same with SDL* - because of dependency hell.
You could execute a command such as 'emerge -i media-video/mplayer'.
Speaking of dependencies does the USE variable affect the dependencies of packages? For instance - i wanted to emerge mplayer and portage said i needen like 20 other packages - including the kde arts server - and i don't even have kde installed, and my sound system is pure alsa 1.0.1 (so that's why i installed it manually)

Do 'emerge ufed' and then run 'ufed'. It is a curses interface for editing your USE flags. It has a list of *all* the USE flags and descriptions of each one. Only enable the ones that you need. For example, you'd want to disable the 'kde', 'qt', and 'arts' USE flags since you don't use KDE.

The tarballs that are downloaded are left in /usr/portage/distfiles by default. As for the actual extracted source code, as long as the emerge is successful, the extracted files are removed.

The "system" keyword is a group of packages that is defined by the Gentoo dev's. It included everything need for a "base" system. The "world" keyword is a group of packages that includes everything that you manually install (emerge <something>). This is kept in the file /var/cache/edb/world. It is safe to edit this file, but there usually isn't a good reason to, unless you know what you're doing.

You need to add the modules you want auto-loaded to /etc/modules.autoload which should be a symlink to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.X where X is the minor version of the kernel you're running.
