Oh yes, now I remember that's why I was using ide-scsi.  However, 
googling brought me this URL

which solves that problem.  The "cat 
cdrdao-1.1.8-pre2.xcyb.2.rh9.athlon.rpm | rpm2cpio | pax -r" that the 
author refers to doesn't work here, as we don't have pax.  I just used 
krusader to get the later version od cdrao.

So now I'm very modern, doing DVD burning using ATAPI.
