sounds like you somehow got a video mode that you cann't handle. You can
put vga=0 in your lilo.conf/grub.conf, or you can try lower vesa modes.
VGA=769 would enable video mode 640x480x8bpp. If that fails, stick with
vga=0 till you get a better monitor.
