Except that you need to give some extra arguments which, IIRC, can't be
done for smb in the automount config files.  But again, this might have
changed since I tried (a long time ago).

That is assuming you do have some control...  The network administrators
here decided that NFS wasn't secure enough and so the only way to access my
central file store is via smb.  Funnily enough, these same people provide
unencrypted web pages where you have to type your password, yes even one to
change it...  But this is getting OT.
