I worked on them when at University since they were a part of the curriculum, but did not ever encounter them at work as an electrical and control engineer, and this was several years ago. Sine wave inverters are widely available, some with specs providing the percentage of harmonic distortion generated under load. IIRC, most quality UPS's do provide a reasonably good sine wave output.
