opengl-update isn't really necessary if you use an nvidia card any more. It is only needed if you are not using the nvidia glx interface, and it is run every time you emerge nvidia-glx, so essentially, you don't need to worry about it.
The only thing you must do after each kernel recompilation is to reemerge nvidia-kernel.
