The font may be changed if /etc/init.d/consolefont is activated, so
maybe a "rc-update del consolefont" will help the next time you boot.
/etc/init.d/consolefont stop might also help directly.

I have a PC where I can switch to the text console this way, but when
switching back, X is corrupted, and I have to reboot :( But my main
machine is just working fine with the nvidia drivers.
