s there a way to copy the current online portage-tree onto a usb-stick or something like that and thus replace ones own portage-tree with these files? I don't have an internet connection at home but I have a 128mb usb-stick and very fast internetconnections at the university where I can put files on the stick due to the availability of usb-interfaces. This would be the only way for me to update gentoo's portage tree. Is this possible?
Sure, you just do emerge sync, copy the entire portage tree on to usb stick (I suggest in a tarball, because those memory sticks usually have FAT filesystem) and then you overwrite your offline portage tree. I can see no caveat here.
Dunno if it matters, but you might want to use the "--preserve" option with tar, so it keeps all the file attributes, permissions, etc.
