I have new Gentoo install done very much according to the GRP that is failing to boot. Grub fails with the message "root block device unspecified on boot". I fed that exact error message into Google Groups and found that every hit was about Gentoo installs and every thread was very recent. The oldest thread started January 19, 2004. Take a look at http://groups.google.com/groups?q=%22root+block+device+unspecified%22
I have tried two installs, with the same result. /dev/hda1 is /boot, ext2 /dev/hda3 is /, ext3 When grub hangs in Step 4 giving "root block device unspecified on boot" I type in "/dev/hda1" and it boots. Both installs were with the 1.4 CD and in each I did an emerge sync and then skipped the use of the prebuilt packages. I did one previous Gentoo install on October and it was both successful and eventful. It was from the same 1.4 CDs. I really have to wonder if a buggy ebuild was released in mid-January. I've been paging through the daily ebuild updates but have yet to find a smoking gun. Any thoughts? I'm going to run another install without the emerge sync and see how that goes.
