Sorry to reply to myself, but I just thought of something else.

Have you tried configuring the interface using dhcpcd from the command-line (ie. disable the Gentoo net.eth* initscripts)?

Are you invoking dhcpcd using -d (so that debug info is sent to syslog)? What do the logs say?

What is the output of route? (before you manually add the default route).
