Read the ebuild, it has more information. But you only need to recompile
your kernel with the above, and you're set.

This is the first time I have booted 2.6.1-mm, and it booted in to gnome
as usual. But when I start an terminal window it opens OK, but I get no
prompt or any text in the window. typing has no affect.
Thanks - that fixed it.
genkernel had included the first 2, but left out devpts.
