Vmware can be tricky sometimes. Are you sure it _can_ start? I.e. you may need to
recompile vmware drivers for your kernel if the ones they provide don't match.
It's easy to find out if that's the case, just run
$/etc/init.d/vmware start
manually as root and see if it starts up normally without complaints.
If it doesn't there is usually a message printed about what to run to make it work
for your machine.
